Hundreds Turn Out for Recruitment Open Day
2007-09-10
It was like a scene from X-Factor. Hundreds of people turned out for a major recruitment event to find out more about working for Glasgow’s newest shopping centre, Silverburn.
Over 600 people turned up on each day to talk to Glasgow South West Regeneration Agency (GSWRA) staff and retailers about careers, hourly-paid work and training opportunities.
Local people had the opportunity to explore the options of a career in Scotland's newest retail destination when GSWRA hosted the special two-day careers event at The Wedge in Pollok.
GSWRA, along with their retail partners, were seeking candidates for a number of vacancies for a whole variety of positions. The event aimed to attract workers to Silverburn where there are career opportunities suitable for people of all ages, circumstances and experience.
Recruitment and career experts were on hand for an informal chat to discuss the available positions, training opportunities and more formal interviews.
Danielle Milligan was one of the local residents who hoped to take advantage of the event she said “I registered online with silverburnjobs.com as I am going to Cardonald college and need a part time job.”
Khalil Bhatti said”There are a lot of big names shops coming to the area because of Silverburn and I would really like to work for one of them.”
A key aim of the event was to emphasise the excellent career prospects with a wide range of job opportunities, not just in sales, flexible working hours and competitive terms and conditions.
Rhonda Rafique, Job Centre Plus Labour Market Recruitment Advisor, said “The event has been very well attended. The response of the local people has been fantastic, everyone has been so keen and enthusiastic. Both the local area and local people can only benefit from the arrival of Silverburn.”
The ‘drop-in’ event offered people the chance to find out more information on the wide range of career and job opportunities in the retail sector such as customer services, catering, cleaning , security and skilled trades.
Alison Sinclair, Chief Executive of GSWRA, was delighted by the level of public response and said: “Local people are very important to this area and GSWRA is committed to building a workforce that is representative of the area it serves.
“I think the message from the public is loud and clear - there’s a great demand for this type of event. It’s a pleasure to see that people of all ages and from all sections of the community want to know more about working at Silverburn”
GSWRA’s partner organisations, such as Next, Debenhams and JD Sports were also represented, which greatly increased the range of advice and information on offer to visitors.
